CASE STUDY
Ken Jason lives in La-Bagatelle, Leguan. He is currently a pupil of Success Primary School and is in Grade 4. Ken lives in a single parent family, which includes his mother and one other sibling. His mother works two jobs and would seldom be at home to take care of him and his sister. Most times, their neighbor would assist him and his sister to prepare for school and even provide them with meals. Ken is not as fortunate as his classmates to afford certain modern-day amenities such as a cellphone, tablet nor wi-fi. He has been having challenges with his writing skills. His primary language is English. Ken loves to play football and likes doing anything that includes hands-on activities. Even though he is sociable and has good verbal communication abilities, he finds it exceedingly difficult to put his thoughts into writing. Ken is an auditory learner, who performs excellently in activities that require oral presentations and conversation, but his writing is difficult in several ways. He struggles to produce ideas for composition, and he frequently requires a lot of encouragement before he starts his writing process. Dunn (2021) research states, it is common for struggling writers to find it hard to arrange their ideas. When writing, he has poor language and sentence structure; his statements often lack consistency and proper grammar. Ken writes slowly, which hinders his fluency and keeps him from finishing in the allocated time. He feels insecure about his writing skills and often hesitates to share his work with his peers and teacher. These difficulties have had an adverse impact on his general self- esteem and academic achievement. According to Wright et al (2019), low self- efficacy frequently characterizes struggling writers, which affects their motivation and output on writing. During observations of Ken`s writing process, he frequently spends time staring at a blank page, uncertain of where he should begin. While brainstorming ideas about writing, Ken often repeats his peer ideas changing one word or sometimes none. His completed work usually is short with disjointed sentences. Despite these difficulties, Ken is a child who is willing and has a desire to do better with support and encouragement. His mother is aware of the challenges he faces based on the reports she received from his class teachers, but she is also having challenges assisting him due to busy work schedule.
